At the Olympic Winter Games Calgary 1988, Dan Jansen was a favorite to win the 500- and 1,000-meter races but, upon his sister's death of leukemia, fell in both. He was unsuccessful again in 1992 but, in Lillehammer in 1994, he finally got his elusive gold medal.
