You have to touch the ground to thank the ground for helping you out. Let's talk a little but about functional skateboarding. Generally, If you feel the ned to push it's because you want to increase your speed. It seems that this theory is incorrect, you actually just put your foot on the ground to make sure it's still there. Then when you realize the ground exists, you give it a high five to give thanks!
